Force on a Current-carrying Conductor

Force on a Current-carrying Conductor problem 15

Diagram 1 shows a wire carrying an electric current. The wire is between the poles of a magnet. The current and the magnetic field produce a force on the wire which is upwards, as shown.

The magnetic poles and the current are now both reversed, as in diagram 2. In which direction is the force on the wire in diagram 2?

  • downwards

  • towards the North pole of the magnet

  • towards the South pole of the magnet

  • upwards
