The purpose of computed tomography (CT scanning) is to produce a 3-dimensional image of a structure.
CT scanning is a technique by which a 3-D image of an internal organ can be built. In this technique, a series of X-ray images of a section or slice through the body is taken at different angles with the rotation of the X-ray beam and X-ray detector around the body.
Data for each individual X-ray image and the angle of viewing are fed into a high-powered computer so that a complete 3-D image can be built.
