According to Hubble's law, light from distant galaxies is red-shifted, which means they are moving away from us, and the further away a galaxy is, the faster it is receding. This uniform recession of galaxies in all directions suggests that space itself is expanding, not that galaxies are simply flying apart through space. This means that if the Universe is expanding now, then in the past it must have been smaller, so scientists concluded that all matter and energy were once concentrated in a very hot, dense point.
This leads to the idea that the Universe began from an initial singularity—a point of infinite density and temperature, an event known as the Big Bang. Thus, Hubble’s law and the idea of the expanding Universe lead to the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe.
